Sports Buying Guide

Hobby vs. retail: which should you buy?

Don’t start with the box. Start with what you want from it.

Hobby

Often aimed at collectors seeking the hobby configuration and release-specific hobby content.

Retail

Often a lower entry point. Never assume the same parallels, odds or guarantees as hobby.

Singles

Worth comparing first if you only want one player, rookie, parallel or autograph.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Read the exact configuration.
  • Check the manufacturer checklist.
  • Verify the feature you want is possible in that configuration.
  • Compare current prices.
  • Compare the target single before buying boxes trying to pull it.
A more expensive box is not automatically a better buy.

“Better” depends on the release, your goal and today’s price.
